Happy New Year!

Best wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and a happy 2008!
We're a little slow to embrace the hipster music, except when it's good. And when Elsa really likes to dance like "the blue one" in Feist's 1, 2, 3, 4 video directed by Patrick Daughters.

We got a drum kit for Elsa's second birthday, but I'm not satisfied and we're sending it back. Any suggestions for a good quality "real" drum kit for a two-year old? It should have a bass, snare, tom and at least one cymbal. I don't care about the stool. A nice sparkly candy apple green or coppertone would be nice.
Oh, and feel free to leave comments, condolences or a rant about how awesome/stupid it is to buy a two-year-old a drum kit.

Elsa's grandparents are taking us to Hawaii for Thanksgiving (!). Any suggestions for things see and do and places to go will be great. Elsa (two years old, a trooper, likes cheese, pizza and bacon) is coming too. All the guide books say don't take a kid to Hawaii, so any toddler-friendly ideas will be really great.

Kaw-liga
(Hank Williams, Sr. and Fred Rose; performed by Hank Sr.)
Kaw-liga was a wooden Indian standing by the door.
He fell in love with an Indian maid over at the antique store.
Kaw -- Li -- Ga, just stood there and never let it show;
So she could never answer "Yes" or "No".
He always wore his Sunday feathers and held a tommy-hawk.
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he'd talk.
Kaw -- Li -- Ga, too stubborn to ever show a sign;
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.
Poor ol' Kaw-liga, he never got a kiss.
Poor ol' Kaw-liga, he don't know what he missed.
Is it any wonder that his face is red;
Kaw-liga, that poor ol' wooden head.
Kaw-liga was a lonely Indian never went nowhere.
His heart was set on the Indian maiden with the coal black hair.
Kaw-liga, just stood there and never let it show;
So she could never answer "Yes" or "No".
Then one day a wealthy customer bought the Indian maid.
And took her, oh, so far away, but ol' Kaw-liga stayed.
Kaw -- Li -- Ga, just stands there as lonely as can be,
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.
Poor ol' Kaw-liga, he never got a kiss.
Poor ol' Kaw-liga, he don't know what he missed.
Is it any wonder that his face is red;
Kaw-liga, that poor ol' wooden head.
Note: The G in "Kaw-liga" is soft, pronounced "kaw-lye-jah".
This is Elsa's greatest motivator for dance and choreography ("like this"). It also works as our night-time lullaby. Kaw-liga is also my favorite inspirational, during long drive thoughts of art-making.
Video: This version by the Collins Kids is pretty rad.

The Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council has a sweet new website.
The Walker Art Center was the first art museum in the country to devote full-time staff (Christi and Witt) to working with and building teen audiences. Since 1994, Walker Teen Programs has been connecting kids to art and artists. Past workshops have brought in Barry McGee, Julie Mehretu, Harrell Fletcher, Shepherd Fairey, Sam Durant, Glenn Ligon, Robin Rhode and Cheryl Dunye. WACTAC also puts on teen art exhibitions. They have five-week workshops with sound artists that result in sick A/V battles. They collaborate on amazing events like Brother and Sister's (!) March of Madness, an all-day secret battle of the bands and scavenger hunt. If you've got a teenager anywhere near Minneapolis, you should get them involved.

Etsy seller Owly Shadow Puppets is "a chicago artist that owns a laser-cutter." Andrea Everman makes owls, mermaids, yetis, seamonsters, bats and these awesome dinosaurs. They have strings rigged up on the back so you can move the arms and heads. They're only $10.50 each, so get 'em while you can.
She has lesson plans for teachers on her website. And she teached puppetry classes and script-writing workshops at 826 Chicago.

Renate Müller's leather and jute animals were designed in the early 1970s for H. Josef Leven, a manufacturer of therapeutic and developmental toys for the disabled. Success was short lived, the parent company was nationalized and rights to the toys were lost. In 1991 Renate Müller regained control of the rights to her own designs. Since then, she's been running a bed and breakfast and filling orders for animals and toys for therapeutic zoos — mainly for kindergartens and hospitals in (surprise) Japan.

Although never intended to be The End, a closing post was made on October 10, 2013. Since then, the blog has been sitting here, in limbo, but never quite dormant. It sort of lives on.
