SCHOOL DAZE (1977)
On the other side of me was a line of pale Puerto Rican boys wearing identical white T-shirts, dark workman trousers, and black hair greased into ducktails. They were small and compact and gave the impression of stillness, and as I stared at their uniformity my heart quickened to realize they were girls. Eyes on the floor, shoulders hunched, they filed past, except for one, who pushed her hands into her pockets and gave me a look I had no way of categorizing, other than to know it made me jumpy and breathless.

Small Victories —
"Where are we going?" he asked as I helped him put on his shoes.
"Nowhere, "we're just walking."

Let us sing the praises —
What if J.K. Rowling would have written the books from the perspective of Hermione?
So, before she goes away for good, let us sing the praises of Hermione. A generation could not have asked for a better role model. Looking back over the series -- from Hermione Granger and the Philosopher's Stone through to Hermione Granger and the Deathly Hallows -- the startling thing about it is how original it is. It's what inspires your respect for Rowling: She could only have written the Hermione Granger by refusing to take the easy way out.
For starters, she gave us a female lead. As difficult as it is to imagine, Rowling was pressured to revise her initial drafts to make the lead wizard male. "More universal," they said. "Nobody's going to follow a female character for 4,000 pages," they said. "Girls don't buy books," they said, "and boys won't buy books about them." But Rowling proved them wrong. She was even asked to hide her own gender, and to publish her books under a pen name, so that children wouldn't run screaming at the thought of reading something by a lady. But Joanne Rowling never bowed to the forces of crass commercialism. She will forever be "Joanne Rowling," and the Hermione Granger series will always be Hermione's show.

"Meeting Cy Twombly Changed My Life" —
As I was standing there, marking the many differences between an actual painting and a slide lecture, a tall, elderly man came out of a set of doors to my left, and joined me in looking. I looked at him briefly, and then the painting. And then back at him, because he was looking unexpectedly familiar.
"Excuse me, but are you Cy Twombly?" I asked.
"Yes," came the reply.

STOKED
"I recently did a few photo shoots for some brands. I like working on commercial work when i can, it pays the bills and creates a whole new set of challenges that I wouldn’t ever experience when working on my own stuff. For these shoots we used street casted models (regular people). They can have a good look but sometimes they are mad stiff because they are not used to being photographed. In an attempt to loosen some of the guys up I asked them what their best memory was. One kid said he can’t remember anything because he smokes a lot of weed (5 to 10 spliffs a day). I also learned that he eats fast food for almost every meal. Another kid who grew up in philly said he didn’t have any good memories. He actually got more and more frustrated through out the course of the day because he literally couldn’t think of any. Another had seen the Wu Tang Clan live in 2004 just before ODB died and that was his. Mine happened when I was 16. I was in a mountain bike race in Boulder, CO. It was called Ride the Rocks, it was a tough race and I was doing pretty good. At one point in the race only the first 10 riders would be left to continue racing and would have to do an extra lap around the course. I was in the top 10 so was my best friend at the time, his name is Dylan. Anyway, i was riding as hard as I could through all of the dirt and dust on the course. I was climbing a hill and looked up and saw my dad there. He was all alone (away from all the other spectators), and he said “C’mon Peter, you are doing really good man!” I could see it on his face that he was genuinely stoked, and he passed the feeling on to me. That moment is my best memory. I kept riding and soon flatted and couldn’t finish the race. My friend Dylan finished the race and was and was semi-crying from exhaustion and his front teeth were caked with dirt. have a good weekend, p."
